TRANSFORMING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CACAO - ONE BAR AT A TIME
I’ve long wondered if I would ever source cacao, and have been asked many times; however it never felt quite right for me … until I discovered a better, more in integrity way for me to steward cacao on this level.
Hi There - in case you don’t know me yet, My name is Rebecca Tendrich, MS and I’m a Cacao Steward, Liasion, and Facilitator based in Central Connecticut.
After 3+ years of sitting with cacao as a daily devotional practice, facilitating dozens of circles and ceremonies, and embarking on a pilgrimage to South and Central America in 2025 (the birth place of cacao) I’ve discovered the most integral and reciprocal way I can source and share cacao.
Not by creating my own brand of ceremonial cacao, but instead serving as an ally and liaison for amazing ceremonial cacao products packaged and branded by natives in country of origin (direct brand cacao) while uplifting and amplifying voices of the farmers, communities, and wayshowers on the ground who make it possible for us to enjoy cacao.
(discover more about my personal cacao journey in the “learn more” section below)
Bringing high quality, integral ceremonial grade cacaos to the states more easily is a game changer for the people behind the ceremonial cacao brands and for us as well.
You see, being in right relationship goes beyond buying high quality, ethically sourced cacao and extending gratitude - those are just the first steps. The cacao industry is complex and has a long history of colonization, even inside of well meaning wellness and spiritual communities. With cacao currently being all the rage, prices sky rocketing, and many people wanting to start their own brands, I’m presenting a unique opportunity to change how we show up with cacao in the way that matters most.
Cacao doesn’t need another white washed brand where her essence gets lost, the process is misunderstood, and the humans doing the actual labor and stewarding become quickly forgotten. What this heart opening, transformational plant medicine needs are true allies willing to support the de-colonization of this industry through changing where and how we purchase ceremonial cacao. By ensuring we include all those in the process are compensated and celebrated instead of cut out to save costs. By taking a stand for whats true and right through something most of us in the Western world have access to that many in the 2nd and 3rd world countries where cacao originates from do not: money.
Cacao brings community together, opens our hearts and minds, and provides us with many incredible and life changing physical, emotional and mental health benefits.
If you’ve ever sat in a circle or ceremony with me or have been positively and profoundly impacted by ceremonial cacao as a heart medicine weaving miracles in your life, this is an incredible opportunity to be in reciprocity and support the new wave of direct brand ceremonial grade cacao. As we move from “me” to “we” mentality with this cause, reciprocity in action through financial giving become a world changing love language.
I now ask for community financial support to help bring this vision to life because it’s no small feat to make this happen – financially, administratively, or logistically!
100% of contributions will go directly toward bringing direct brand ceremonial cacaos and the start up of the legal business (along with associated expenses) to our budding cacao community in Connecticut, New England, and beyond.
TRANSPARENCY MATTERS: FUND ALLOCATION
Part of the inspiration for this start up is INTEGRITY to the medicine and the mission. In order to maintain alignment with that value, below you’ll find where the funds may be allocated to. Please note: the below is an estimate and not a full list of potential expenses.
I’m currently fundraising $15,000 to help fund this project. All contributions will support this cause. The goal is to have the chuncho cacao and essential oil available for purchase in the USA by spring / summer 2026 - which then those proceeds will also go toward supporting the below business needs.
The initial proceeds will support the following business goals and needs:
· Ceremonial Grade Chuncho Cacao
· Chuncho Cacao Essential Oil
· Oil distribution supplies
· Shipping supplies
· Tax ID + sales tax registration
· business legal + administrative costs **
· Business Insurance
· Website Upgrades
· Branding + Marketing
· Social Media Support
· Book keeping + taxes
· Labor + Input
· Misc. + Unforseen expenses
** note: currently looking into non-profit structure or LLC - unsure of which this will be placed under at this time, but leaning more toward non-profit. More to follow on this.
If you feel inspired to support this initiative in a non-monetary way, here are some additional ways you may do that:
· Make a financial contribution
· Share this page with your community and cacao / chocolate lovers
· Share this on social media and beyond
· Offer Prayer & Kind words
A NEW ERA BEGINS: DE-COLONIZING CACAO BEGINS WITH US
During my recent travels and my studies, I’ve been learning that this new wave of direct brand ceremonial grade cacao on the market that is being sourced, packaged, and branded by native people in the country of origin. These companies are owned and operated by the indigenous people of the land.
This is HUGE – and changes everything as these brands gain more exposure.
Why?
Because they are the rightful wisdom keepers and medicine carriers of cacao -To purchase cacao directly from brands created by natives, is putting more money, awareness, and credit directly in the hands who [rightfully] deserve it.
The more I learn about these companies, the more I’m seeing that my role in the cacao industry isn’t to create another white washed new age brand, it’s to stand in the integrity of the medicine by amplifying their life’s work and devotion as well as the voices of those on the ground at country of origin.
It’s giving: de-colonization of cacao.
And I’m 100% here for that.
(discover more about de-colonization of cacao in the “learn more” section below)
ACCESSIBLE HEIRLOOM, NATIVE CEREMONIAL CACAO IN CT, NEW ENGLAND & BEYOND
From my research and colleagues, I’ve learned there is a unique opportunity to help further this de-colonization effort – which is to make these direct brand ceremonial cacaos more easily available and accessible in the United States.
Realistically, as a consumer, ordering independently directly from country of origin usually requires high kilo minimums, costly shipping, tariffs, and wait times. This can be confusing, frustrating, costly, and ultimately leaves many feeling like it isn’t worth the hassle. (I would know as I have done this) Therefore they don’t end up purchasing these direct brand cacaos and instead choose a cacao that is already available by shipping in the USA, leaving great brands undiscovered because it can be challenging to obtain.
That’s where I come in.
My mission is to partner with direct brand ceremonial grade cacao companies that are sourced, packaged, and branding in country of origin to bring their product to the United States and make it more easily accessible to our community in Connecticut, New England, and Beyond. My second mission is to uplift and amplify the voices of cacao (farmers, producers, biz owners, wayshowers, etc) as well as provide cacao education and facilitate transformative ceremonial spaces.
And wouldn’t it be amazing to see these direct brands available in some of your favorite shops and studios? I’d love to partner with local places in CT to have these products readily available for you for pickup, removing the wait to time and shipping costs for your cacao. It’s a win-win-win!
OUR FIRST PARTNERSHIP: KAUKAWA CEREMONIAL CACAO
When I spent time in the Sacred Valley of Peru in 2025, I fell in love with a brand of cacao called Kaukawa – owned by a native Peruvian woman, Fiorella Richter, who is initiated in the Q’ero tradition. Kaukawa offers a type of cacao bean, or genotype, called Chuncho, known as the Golden Inca Cacao and adheres to the “ceremonial cacao” standards. Each batch of Kaukawa is blessed in the Q’ero tradition, which is a unique and special part of the process that provides a unique energy that we get to experience.
Chuncho cacao is the genotype of cacao I’ve been sitting with in my daily practice for almost 3 years now and a cacao that has profoundly changed my life. Chuncho cacao has my whole heart, and I’m ecstatic to announce that I’m in process of partnering with Kaukawa to bring Chuncho cacao AND their Chuncho cacao essential oil directly to Connecticut.
The essential oil is a unique and luxurious way to connect with the essence of cacao without consuming – this cacao essential oil was a potent support and ally in my travels, helped open my heart, and quite honestly made me feel like a Goddess!
(discover more about Kaukawa and Chuncho cacao in the “learn more” section below)
Please note: Any cacaos or cacao products that I bring in will be in alignment with “ceremonial cacao” standards. They will be native, heirloom beans packaged and branded by native people from and in the country of origin. Each cacao / product will be thoroughly vetted, tested, and researched before I offer them. I’m also looking at a criollo from Guatemala and other cacao genotypes.
LEGACY OF LOVE: A BETTER FUTURE, TOGETHER
Only together can we make a better future, not only for ourselves but for the collective at large .
Only together can we take a stand for what we believe in and what is right and true.
Only together can we right the wrongs of our ancestors and move into a more collaborative mindset based in reciprocity.
Only together can we move from “me” to “we”.
Only together can we create sustainable, lasting change - this is not something I Can do alone.
And we can begin to do all this through how and where we source our ceremonial cacao.
So, if you feel the call to contribute to this cause, you can do so using the link below.
Your support and love are greatly appreciated and received.
Please check this for updates on fund raising goals, which will be updated weekly (or more often, if necessary).
You’ll also receive updates of the process via email such as ordering and when the products are available on my website.
In addition, once you become a contributor (regardless of amount), you’ll be invited to a private launch party once the first batch of product arrives in CT!
Thank you, thank you, thank from the bottom of my heart for coming along this journey and your support of this cause!
I am being deeply humbled through this process and it is truly one of the greatest honors and joys of my life to begin bringing this vision to life.
This is my legacy of love, my vision for a better future, and effort to restore right relationship not only with the medicine, but the people of cacao as well.
It is the fullest expression at this time of my daily prayer that “may I do this medicine justice with my life today and every day.”
I looking forward to seeing what unfolds in the world of cacao as we move toward a more reciprocal and sustainable way of doing business.
Cheers to the new wave of ceremonial cacao making a splash in Connecticut, New England, and beyond!
With the love of cacao in my heart,
Rebecca xo

When we drink ceremonial cacao, it’s extremely important to remember its true origins. This sacred plant was not made for most of us (westerners); it was a revered plant ally of Indigenous peoples in Central and South America for thousands of years before it was stolen and commercialized by white explorers.
Much of that reverence was lost when South America was colonized by Spain and cacao made its way to Europe.
The Spanish Conquistadors stole cacao through force, slavery, and murder on its native lands and turned it into a luxury good for the elite. Over time, it was stripped of its ritual and sacred roots and became the sweetened chocolate we know today. The very chocolate industry that now profits from it was built on a history of colonization and cultural appropriation.
If you are a white Western consumer, it's not your place to claim this medicine as your own, but rather to approach it with deep respect and humility.
This is also why it is so important to purchase from Indigenous wisdom keepers and companies who honor the sacred standards of ceremonial cacao as well as be honest about who you are and your relationship to cacao. It’s an act of decolonization, acknowledging and giving back to the people who lovingly stewarded this plant for centuries, while also giving credit where it is due.
And that is exactly the inspiration behind this non-profit. To aid the effort to restore right relatioship with cacao, the land, and it’s people.
If your curiosity is piqued by the history, origins, colonization, and subsequent decolonization efforts of cacao and it’s wisdom keepers, I encourage you to do additional research and educate yourself.

When it comes to ceremonial grade cacao, there is no certifying body or governing agency that requires certain standrads in order to use the label of “ceremonial grade”. Ceremonial grade standards are generally agreed upon standards in the cacao industry and are listed below. Please note that it is very important to do your own research and ask questions when it comes to purchasing ceremonial grade cacao because, unfortunately, it is not always used ethically.
The standards are (and may vary slightly based on who you ask):
100 % Pure - It's 100% pure cacao paste, not powder.. The whole cacao bean—including its fat (cacao butter, which holds A LOT of the benefical nutrients) and solids—preferably stone-ground into a rich paste.
No additives - Cacao is a whole food, so the only thing you'll find on the ingredient list is "100% Cacao" or "Theobroma Cacao."
Processing - Gentle, low-temperature processing - To preserve the cacao’s delicate compounds like theobromine and anandamide, it's typically fermented, dried, and roasted at low temperatures.
Single Origin / Region - Or specific regional sourcing: Reputable and transparent ceremonial cacao, which is traceable, is sourced from a single farm, a specific cooperative, or a small, defined region.
Farming Practices - Grown in harmony with nature: The best cacao comes from organic, sustainable, regenerative farming and agroforestry systems where cacao trees are grown in a biodiverse environment, not in a mono-crop plantation.
Direct Trade - The cacao should be ethically sourced, directly with the farmers and their communities receiving fair and equitable compensation—often well above the commodity market price.
Energetics - The cacao is grown, harvested, and prepared with respect and reverence for the plant and its ancient roots – the energetics and intention matter. Many sources of true ceremonial cacao work directly with indigenous communities in its native regions of Central and South America.

Over 3 years ago, I began my devotional relationship with cacao – not just as a medicinal plant, but as a spirit and guide. I knew from the first time I sat with cacao that I would serve this others.
During this time of my life, I was at a personal rock bottom - completely heart broken from my dreams of van life failing, ending a budding relationship, and taking a huge step away from everything that felt comfortable. I felt lost and directionless.
And while I sat in rock bottom with myself, I remembered having tried ceremonial cacao at a few holistic events in the past. I recalled it was known for heart healing and opening, and even heard people talking about the blissful, euphoric feels it can enduce. At the time, I had no idea if it was even science backed or all woo woo, and I didn’t care. I was seeking relief, direction, and guidance - and was willing to try anything. (and spoiler alert: I later learned that all of the effects of cacao are science backed!)
Ceremonial Cacao has since transformed my life in nearly every way, from the inside out, with her ability to help me find profound healing, growth, meaning, and eventually joy, fulfillment, creativity, and community. Cacao became has become a life path for me. A slow burn of personal growth and development versus the “spiritual high” that often seems attractive.
In those early days, I sat in a full ceremony at home with cacao for several months. I sat and listened … Since then, I’ve say with cacao over 1,300 times in this devotional practice and long term energetic study. I can say with certainty at this point the depth of our heart and love that we can access and experience with the support of Mama Cacao is an infinite spiral inward. I am continuously blown away by the life changing experiences I’ve had and witnessed in others through this plant medicine.
In 2025, my relationship to cacao was completely rocked when I embarked on a cacao-inspired pilgrimage. I was ultimately asked by the medicine to confront challenging and uncomfortable themes such as entitlement, extractive new age culture, appropriation, sourcing cacao respectfully, being taken advantage of, cultural resentment, and even looked long and hard at my own self-worth, security, and mission/purpose. For the depth of relationship I had previously cultivated with cacao, all this was extremely unsettling.
I questioned everything about my relationship to cacao, my “right” to talk about her and share her in community in exchange for payment, wondering if anything I had ever experienced with cacao was even true or real – it got dark. I lost faith in my vision and my mission.
Still…no matter what happened, something inside of me told me to keep showing up with cacao in whatever way I could every day I was able to. (Even when I didn’t always have access to ceremonial-grade cacao.)
And so I did…some days, begrudgingly so. Some days I was numb, feeling decision fatigue of constantly being on the move, drowning in a vast sea of uncertainty, feeling so isolated and alone that not even the warm embrace of Mama Cacao could pull me out of the darkness. This made me question everything even more.
But I kept hearing the still, small voice invite me to show up, and so I kept coming to the altar of love…with all my feelings, my doubts, and the many questions with no answers.
I spent several months this year sitting with the bitterness of love – the raw, searing, sometimes harsh kind of love that doesn’t even feel like love because it has you looking at yourself long and hard – and I drank the medicine of life.
I got WORKED this year. And my spirit was ROCKED.
And truthfully, in some of the darkest moments, I didn’t know if my relationship with cacao would ever be the same or if I would even feel the call to serve anymore.
But I just kept trusting that voice, even when … especially when … I felt like I couldn’t trust myself anymore. Eventually, thank the Goddess, I had the inspiration to import my beloved Chuncho Cacao from Peru to Colombia.
When I opened that package and made my first cup of chuncho in 5 months, tears welled in my eyes before I even took a sip. And as I drank my cacao, it felt like a homecoming. My entire heart came back online – in just 1 cup of cacao – everything felt clearer, brighter, and more easeful. Decisions and next steps where came inspired and hope was quickly restored. But most of all, I felt like I had been reunited with my soulmate after a long and dark separation.
On the other side of that experience, I feel a deeper and more grounded connection to cacao, feel her in the full spectrum of true love – sweet and bitter, and have been preparing to enter my next chapter with being not just a steward of cacao, but serving as an ally and liaison to the people behind it as well.
After much reserach, contemplation, and prayer, I have landed on the notion that forming a non-profit to support bringing these direct branded cacaos to the states and making them more easily available is the best way I can currently support this calling - taking the next step into the unknown to support this mission.
I look forward to continue to developing a deeper relationship with cacao and it’s wisdom keepers and seeing where the path is leading me as I deepen in devotion to the medicine through sourcing ehtical, direct branded cacao products and forming a non profit.
Thank you for being a part of the journey and following along. Stay tuned for more updates!
